Walmart, according to a report, said it would hire more than 150,000 hourly workers in the United States, given the rise in the number of shoppers due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Earlier this week, Amazon made a similar move announcing it would hire 100,000 warehouse and delivery workers in the United States as the virus outbreak boosts online orders.

Walmart plans to pay a special cash bonus of $300 to full-time hourly workers and $150 to part-time associates.

The 150,000 new workers to be hired through the end of May will work in Walmart’s stores, clubs, distribution and fulfillment centers, the company said.

Earlier, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation have committed $25 million to support organizations on the front lines responding to the outbreak to help meet the critical needs resulting from the global COVID-19 pandemic.

“In times of need, we see communities come together to do extraordinary things. This pandemic is no different,” said Kathleen McLaughlin, executive vice president and chief sustainability officer for Walmart and president of the Walmart Foundation.
