Amazon has confirmed that Adam Selipsky, the CEO of data visualization firm Tableau, will be the next CEO of Amazon Web Services. His selection follows the announcement that current AWS CEO Andy Jassy is slated to become Amazon CEO in the third quarter of this year when Jeff Bezos steps down.

Before taking the helm at Tableau in 2016, Selipsky had actually spent over a decade at AWS, helping to launch the business and then heading its global sales, marketing, and support division. He had also previously held senior leadership positions at video technology firm RealNetworks.

As CEO of Tableau, Selipsky grew the company to four times its initial value in as many years and led a successful overhaul of its strategy that subsequently saw Tableau acquired by Salesforce in an enormous 2019 deal.

“Adam brings strong judgment, customer obsession, team building, demand generation, and CEO experience to an already very strong AWS leadership team,” Jassy said of his return to AWS. “And, having been in such a senior role at AWS for 11 years, he knows our culture and business well.”

Selipsky will officially join AWS on May 17, according to the Amazon blog, and a transition period of several weeks will follow before the major leadership changes take place.
