Indonesia's green job push: Key to sustainable future
The Ministry of Manpower of Indonesia has promised to ensure that green jobs are a core aspect of the country's sustainability programs for the period 2025-2029. According to Anwar Sanusi, the Secretary General of the Ministry, there is no doubt that green jobs are becoming increasingly widespread and according to him, their workforce must also keep abreast with the nature of a green job.
Quoting the International Labour Organisation (ILO), Sanusi pointed out that green jobs are key to building a strong and sustainable economy and society. The jobs help protect the environment for future generations.
During a consultation on the 2025-2029 National Medium Term Development Plan (RPJMN) Technocratic Draft, Sanusi highlighted the environmental and economic benefits of green jobs. He noted that the draft identifies key growth sectors for employment, such as renewable energy, energy efficiency, waste management, sustainable transportation, and sustainable agriculture.
To support the development of green jobs, the Ministry of Manpower plans to promote the use of tools and techniques based on green productivity. This initiative includes developing work competency standards, creating competency schemes, and designing training programs tailored to green jobs.
Additionally, the Ministry will collaborate with organisations, industries, and vocational training institutes to strengthen partnerships in implementing green productivity practices. Coordination with Bappenas, the national development planning agency, is also underway to ensure these efforts align with national development goals. This strategic move underscores Indonesia's commitment to sustainable development, emphasizing that progress should not come at the expense of the environment.
