Australian government launches online tool to help SMEs with hiring

After close consultation with small business owners and extensive user testing to ensure it meets their needs, the Morrison Government has launched an Employment Contract Tool. The online hiring tool is expected to take the stress out of hiring their first staff member and reduce the risks of costly mistakes.

“As a Government, we’ve listened to small business owners who’ve told us that the experience of hiring their first employee can be confusing, risky and time-consuming,” said Minister for Industry, Science and Technology Christian Porter.

Among other things, The Employment Contract Tools makes it easier for businesses to take on an employee by providing the information they need to understand their employment obligations. The tool lays out the steps required for employers to hire a new person, and takes away the regulatory compliance burden on businesses so they can focus on what’s most important – doing business.

The HR tech space has seen many service providers emerge with diverse solutions for varied businesses. But the intent and interest to help the companies with their talent challenges through tech intervention has been mostly observed among the private sector. It is encouraging to see the government take keen interest in solving the talent challenges of the small business owners.

As Assistant Minister to the Prime Minister and Cabinet Ben Morton said, “We’re making it easier for businesses to invest, create new jobs and assist in the recovery of Australia’s economy post-COVID-19.”

The launch of the online tool is an important deliverable from the Deregulation Task Force 2019 to help small businesses employ their first person. A priority of the Government’s Deregulation Agenda is ensuring that where regulation is required, it is designed in the most efficient and timely way, with minimal cost to business. With this hiring online tool the Australian government has paved the way for newer opportunities for other HR tech innovators in the market. It will be interesting to see how these innovators reach out to the government to help them with the other challenges they might be looking to solve.
