AMD to invest USD 50 million to expand and upskill its workforce in 3 years
AMD Singapore is gearing up to expand its workforce steadily in the next three years to accelerate next-generation product development. In partnership with EDB, the company will be investing more than USD 50 million to develop local talent through mentorship, overseas training stints, and post-graduate research studies.
The expanded team will focus on High-Performance Computing (HPC) activities, including product and hardware development, device analysis, data science and artificial intelligence research. These new products and hardware are part of AMD’s product portfolio that will address new markets, and strategies to accelerate data centre growth and deliver pervasive artificial intelligence leadership.
Talking about the brand’s development, AMD Singapore’s Managing Director, El Saravanan, said, “We are thrilled to be expanding our workforce in Singapore and are deeply committed to developing the remarkable engineering talent locally.”
He further revealed how AMD will provide a platform for budding talents to amplify their skills. “Students will receive the opportunity to equip themselves with the required skillset for semiconductor R&D. Together with our partnership with local universities, such as NTU, NUS and SUTD, students will also be given the opportunities to work for AMD via the brand’s internship programmes for a hands-on experience in the semiconductor industry," added Saravanan.
Over the past decade, AMD Singapore, which has over 1,000 employees, successfully transitioned from a high-volume test manufacturing facility to a product development center with leadership and technical expertise to execute and sustain a strong ecosystem of New Product Introduction (NPI).
Since 2016, AMD Singapore has significantly expanded its local R&D operations amidst a growing customer and partner base. Currently, around 85 per cent of AMD Singapore’s workforce drive innovation in high-performance computing, graphics, and visualisation technologies within Product Development and NPI ecosystem teams.
