Correlation between digitization and happy employees

What are the ways in which an employee can be happy and productive in a digital organization?
Correlation between digitization and happy employees

Running a business was simpler back in the day with less of technology and more people interactions, some would say. In the past decade, everything has changed massively, especially with the advent of social media and the need for organizations to transform themselves digitally. With the transformation also being embedded within the organization by way of change in culture to boost this drive, it is vital to keep a check on an employee's satisfaction and happiness levels at work. It is strongly believed and even advocated that a happy employee is at her most productive best, at work.

A recent Aon Hewitt Study says that a 5 percent improvement in the working of a productive employee can lead to a 3 percent revenue increase. It means that each percentage point that rises because of employee engagement leads to an additional 0.6 percent growth in sales resulting in revenue. So, here are a few methods you can assimilate to ensure you that your digital culture is creating a happy workforce:

Providing the right digital tools

A Randstad report titled Workplace 2025: The Post-Digital frontier highlighted that job fulfillment is one of the key factors that employers can achieve by providing the right digital tools to their employees. Technology is a crucial motivator for teams, with 42 percent of companies acknowledging the benefits of digital and mobile devices. Investing time by training them to use the tools at their disposal will keep them engaged and give them a sense of fulfillment at work. The digital tools adopted by you shouldn't be a source of additional work for them. It should make their lives easier, making more time for them to focus on the creative aspects of the job.

Pathway to communication

Communication, as they say, is a two-way street. The leaders at the management level often effectively communicate their plans to implement changes or what and where they visualize to see the organization reach in a specific period. However, an employee might not enjoy the same privileges; they may feel bottled up if the pathway to a conversation is just one way, i.e., top-down. A digital leader helps create a healthier office culture and a strong staff engagement plan, and thus, employees prefer to work under a digital leader. A leader makes sure that he provides an atmosphere where open communication can be attained without the employee's job security put at risk. This can also help strengthen an employee's bonds with people and enhance their network connections.

Training for digital skills

Existing employees with no digital skills are often thought of as a liability to the company, and they are well aware of this fact. Companies today are looking to hire Millenial and GenZ professionals to keep up with the rapid digital changes taking place. Empowering employees with digital education, allow them to be free of the fear of termination. This motivates them to work harder and learn new skills. Additionally, they consider the organizations as a caring source, giving them a chance to improve themselves, making them grateful towards the company.

Creating a digital employee experience

Researchers have found that spending money on experience makes us happier in the long run than spending money on materialistic things. In today's age, life has become all about experiences; people prefer to travel the world rather than purchase a new house or a car. However, what about the experience of the employees? Employee experience does not mean just being an attractive employer with bean bags and free food. Employee experience is about enabling your current workforce to create value, be innovative, and also have fun while doing it. The Oracle Survey in 2016 said that only 44 percent of employees claim to have the right tools to complete their given tasks. Being productive and creating value is the main factor that motivates employees, gives them job satisfaction and leads to engagement at work.

Key takeaway

With the emergence of digitalization and the need to transform organizations into digitally functional companies, employee experience is the trend that is taking over the sector. Nonetheless, an employee's productivity is no longer the sole focus to retain an employee. Employee's digital experience is becoming the key determinant to the happiness quotient or the lack thereof.
