Contrary to popular belief, it wasn't a trendy tech role or a high-powered finance position that topped the charts for worker happiness.

Instead, the construction industry emerged as the winner, achieving an impressive average satisfaction score of 72.20 out of 100. This suggests that factors beyond salary contribute significantly to job satisfaction.

Construction workers reported particularly high levels of contentment with their compensation (73.1) and felt a strong alignment with their industry's culture and values (74.9).

Following closely behind in second place was the accounting and tax sector, boasting an average satisfaction score of 71.92. This industry stood out for providing excellent career opportunities, as evidenced by its leading score of 75.3 in this category.

Rounding out the top three was the manufacturing sector, with an overall satisfaction score of 71.75. Notably, manufacturing achieved the highest score for diversity and inclusion (77.9), highlighting its commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive work environment.

Happiness: more than the money

These findings challenge conventional assumptions about job satisfaction and underscore the importance of factors such as strong workplace culture, ample opportunities for growth, and a commitment to diversity and inclusion.

While the study highlighted several industries with high levels of employee satisfaction, it also shed light on those lagging in creating fulfilling work experiences. The tourism and legal sectors were identified as the unhappiest, with retail and e-commerce ranking last with a dismal average satisfaction score of 60.10 out of 100.

The study authors attributed the low scores in tourism to a combination of low pay and demanding work schedules that often involve long and inflexible hours. Similarly, retail workers reported the lowest levels of happiness due to a confluence of factors, including notoriously low wages, inflexible hours, poor leadership, and a lack of opportunities for career advancement.
