However, all this requires an effort to closely understand the profile, aspirations, and capabilities of each team member—an effort that not all companies or HR departments are willing to make, which is clearly perceived by workers, affecting their commitment and even their productivity.

In a recent survey conducted by advisory firm Gartner, concerning employee career preferences, a striking revelation emerged: only one in four employees feels confident about their career prospects within their current organisation. The findings highlight the pressing need for companies to reassess their talent management strategies and create solid pathways for professional growth.

The survey, which involved a diverse pool of employees from various industries, uncovered a significant disparity between employees' aspirations and their perception of advancement opportunities.

The survey revealed that fewer than one in three employees knows how to progress their career over the next five years. Many employees do not feel they can rely on their managers for help, and only 50% of employees report that their manager tailors feedback based on the role they want to move into. As a result, employees are increasingly considering leaving their organisations.

The Gartner study found that among more than 480 employees who were actively looking for a new job, three-quarters were interested in external roles.

Despite widespread ambition and a desire for growth, many employees express dissatisfaction with the career development opportunities available to them within their organisations.
