Twitter announces 2021 inclusion & diversity plans
Twitter published its latest Inclusion & Diversity report last week, summarizing the steps it has taken to improve its I&D this year and laying out several changes it intends to make in 2021. The social media platform had earlier this year announced that it wants 50 percent of its global workforce to be women, and at least 25 percent of its US workforce to be underrepresented minorities, by 2025.
Towards that goal, Twitter will be introducing changes to the way it handles pay equity, promotions, and hiring in 2021, according to Dalana Brand, Head of Inclusion & Diversity. In a blog post, she wrote that Twitter is now examining differences in leadership roles and pay equity by gender, and will reveal its metrics for the first time in its 2021 annual report.
Also beginning in 2021, the company will give employees information on the pay bands for their individual positions, although Brand's post did not go into details on what measures might be taken if large inequities are uncovered as a result, or how employees might seek redress.
In addition, Twitter will be expanding its “Diverse Slates Initiative”—a requirement, initially introduced in 2019, that interview panels for roles Senior Director and above must consider at least one female candidate for global positions and at least one Black or Latinx candidate for US positions. Moving forward, this requirement will apply to all roles Manager and above.
