Uber to pay $1.9 million to settle sexual harassment complaints
Uber Technologies Inc. is paying $34,000 each to all the 56 employees who filed claims of sexual harassment which amounts to a total of $1.9 million. Additionally, 431 other employees who complained of pay disparities for women and minorities would get $11,000 apiece as part of the $10-million settlement.
The payouts for harassment and hostile-work-environment claims were calculated based on the austerity and duration of the alleged misconduct, the existence of supporting witnesses and documentation, the impact on the victim, the culprit's job title and other circumstances. According to the reports, two people have opted out of the settlement for undisclosed reasons.
In July 2017, Uber said it bumped up salaries to ensure all employees, regardless of gender or race, are paid equally based on their location, job, and tenure in the role. Uber said it also re-evaluated employee salaries after paying bonuses in March. However, in October 2017, a lawsuit was filed against Uber by three Latina engineers who alleged they were paid less than their white or Asian male colleagues.
Last month, Uber's Head of Human Resources Liane Hornsey resigned following an internal investigation into how she handled racial discrimination claims within the company.
