The availability of highly skilled talent in the region makes Singapore the location of choice for Uber to set up an office and regional hub with 165 employees.

Uber plans to increase its headcount in Singapore now that the new office for APAC region is being created in the country. However, the ride-hailing service does not plan to resume major services in the Southeast Asia region.

Even after Uber’s merger with its Southeast Asian rival Grab, the company’s regional operations have continued. The 165 employees retained after the merger operate out of an office in the Frasers Tower and perform various roles ranging from public affairs, finance and marketing.

Now Uber plans to venture into the food delivery business and other opportunities in the APAC markets. One strategy to achieve these goals is to tap into the skilled and capable talent in the region. Singapore has been chosen as the regional hub because of the talent pool available in the country, according to a press statement.

This decision of increasing the headcount at Uber comes at the heels of Grab’s announcement with a plan to raise its number of employees upto 3,000 i.e. almost two times the size of its existing staff. Grab will also make Singapore its new headquarters by 2020.
