Boris Johnson to step down as UK prime minister
UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson is reportedly stepping down from his post amid clamour from Tory MPs for him to resign. He is also quitting as leader of the Conservative Party.
Johnson will remain a caretaker prime minister until September, or when Tories elect his replacement. However, some MPs are urging him to step down immediately, UK media outlets reported.
A series of scandals, such as a sexual misconduct case allegedly involving a senior official he had appointed, had rocked Johnson's administration.
The embattled prime minister had initially rejected calls for his resignation, which stemmed from questions about his own integrity and the way he handled the allegations. He purportedly yielded to the pressure after at least 59 ministers and junior ministers quit his government in protest.
