Why coding is the most important job skill of the future
Technology has transformed humanity and has enabled us to do so much more by automating repetitive tasks, which allows us humans to do so much more with our creative minds, thus propelling the human civilization towards progress.
With technology advancing rapidly, newer opportunities are being created. One of the fastest-growing fields is coding since it's foundational for businesses to employ programmers to help them automate business processes.
Consider Amazon, for example. It has made it possible for humans to purchase products without ever having to leave their home. A few clicks and your order is ready to be delivered to your doorstep in a few working days. Uber is another example of how technology has been used to solve the problem of traveling locally. Earlier, one had to walk out of their homes, look for taxis, and bargain for prices. Now, just a single click, a cab is available at your doorstep.
These are just two examples from a vast list that includes companies like Google, Facebook, Airbnb, etc. impacting humanity's entire race.
Software engineering forms the core of all these companies. Hence, these companies always try to actively hire some of the best engineers in the market to strengthen their offerings further and evolve it as per the changing requirements of humanity.
A good software engineer is sound at problem solving. They are logical thinkers who look at business processes and try to automate mundane tasks, thereby saving cost, time, and other resources.
As years pass by, tech grows. As tech grows, a lot more jobs become automated. This slowly leads to some mundane jobs becoming obsolete. Let's take the example of a person whose task is to do data entry. Due to rapid automation in recent years, the data entry jobs have dropped drastically, and there are 1000s of similar jobs that have been automated with lines of code hereby replacing humans and thereby freeing them to do more creative & meaningful tasks.
Hence, coding, in current times, has become a very basic and sought after skill in the job market. Since most businesses are trying to move online & bring in high levels of automation, more and more coding related jobs are being generated.
Thus, a lot of mechanical/electrical engineering jobs are also now coding related & not just their core work.
Unfortunately, surveys show that a very high percentage of engineering graduates are technically unfit for software related roles. Thus, a large percentage of engineers remain jobless after they graduate.
Luckily, as the market forces demand & supply to reach equilibrium - a lot of EdTech companies have come up with offerings tailored for young graduates to help them learn hands on coding and find jobs as developers.
Given this kind of progress in technology, ability to code will be a basic life skill for the next generation - just as using computers has been for ours!
Thankfully, the sentiment can be seen at the highest level - in the recently released NEP (National Educational Policy) in India, where students from grade 6 can opt to learn how to code and write programs. This could turn out to be a brilliant move by the Indian government which will help India prepare for the huge surge in demand for skilled programmers in the years to come.
