The second edition of the HR Hackathon organized by the Singapore Human Resources Institute (SHRI) concluded successfully on Saturday, 9 November 2019. The event which took place at Suntec City Convention & Exhibition Center saw the participation of 17 students from schools including Nanyang Polytechnic, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Republic Polytechnic, Singapore Polytechnic, Temasek Polytechnic, ITE College East and ITE College Central.

The HR Hackathon by SHRI offers students a unique platform to develop an interest in HR and implement related solutions in the HR sector.

All the students were provided training in four areas a month before 9th November on areas including Design Thinking, Presentation, Financials and HR Tech. Students were also provided case statements during the training period and the companies included Far East Organization, HR Tech SG, Network for Electronic Transfers Singapore Pte. Ltd (NETS), Pinnacle Financial Services, Sciente International, TeeKay Corporation, Winners Harbour and Yeo Hiap Seng (Yeos).

The 17 student teams presented in the morning and were judged by judges from case owner companies. The top five teams selected from the morning session presented to a panel of three judges which included Daniel Chia, Head of Human Resources, Samsung Asia Pte Ltd, Eddie Lee, Executive Director, SHRI and Leong CheeTung, Co-founder & CEO, EngageRocket.

The event also saw a panel discussion on the topic “Future of Work: Forces of Change” and the panelists were Angelina Chua, Group Head of Human Resource (Yeo Hiap Seng), Daniel Chia, Head of Human Resources (Samsung Asia Pte Ltd) and Leong CheeTung, Co-founder & CEO (EngageRocket) and the moderator was Adrian Tan, Regional Leader - Client Solutioning APAC (PeopleStrong).

The panelists shared their views in regard to how the HR landscape has changed over the last five years due to the increased involvement of Tech/DATA analytics/AI related areas and what are some of the differences they see in the HR industry within their own organizations and experiences.

They also shared about the different cultures amongst different organizations and that millennials entering the workforce, too need to find out and understand these differences and match it towards their own expectations and ambition in their career.

The theme this year was “Future of Work designed by Future Workforce” and it was open to Polytechnic, ITE & University students.

The winner of the SHRI HR Hackathon 2019 is Team Zenith from Temasek Polytechnic and the 1st Runner up is Team W-Solutions from Republic Polytechnic while the 2nd Runner up is Team People Persons from Singapore Polytechnic.
