Twitter CEO says employees can return to office starting March 15
Social networking company Twitter will reopen its offices and resume business travel on March 15, CEO Parag Agrawal said.
In an email to his employees that he also posted on his Twitter page, Agrawal reiterated his predecessor Jack Dorsey's policy, noting that staff will be permitted to work remotely full-time if that's what they're comfortable with.
“Our top priority since the beginning of the pandemic has been to keep you all safe and this will continue…the decisions about where you work, whether you feel safe travelling for business, and what events you attend, should be yours,” Agrawal wrote.
While he said that he wants Twitter workers to work wherever they "feel most productive and creative" and that the firm is devoted to "truly flexible work," his statement acknowledged the challenges of distant work while also noting that "office visits and team meetings bring the culture to life in such a strong way," among other things.
“As we open back up, our approach remains the same. Wherever you feel most productive and creative is where you will work and that includes working from home full-time forever. Office every day? That works too. Some days in office, some days from home? Of course. That’s actually how most of you feel,” Agrawal said.
This suggests that Twitter's remote work culture will differ from companies such as Dropbox, which claimed in 2020 that it would become "virtual first”.
While Twitter appears to be expressing some preference in its messaging, its policies are still more flexible than those of some other tech companies. Amazon, for example, is leaving decisions on work-from-home policies to workers and individual employees. Google and Microsoft have announced that they will be experimenting with hybrid policies in which employees will come to work on some days but not all.
